NAMPA, Ida. (Feb. 19) Demolishing meet records along the way, Jessica Pixler ran for a pair of wins to pace Seattle Pacific University to its fourth straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's indoor track and field championship Monday at the Idaho Sports Center.

In all, the Falcons, who also got two sprint wins from Latasha Essien, won eight of nine events on the track to win by a margin of 88 points.

The SPU men took fifth but collected two individual victories and one relay. Central Washington edged Western Washington by 5.5 points for the team title.

Seattle Pacific set the tone in the first final of the day, the one-mile run. Pixler (Fr., Sammamish, Wa./Eastlake) destroyed the old meet record by more than 13 seconds, and fellow freshman Jane Larson (Sr., Fall City, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) also beat it in a strong 1-2 finish. Pixler's time was 4 minutes, 54.53 seconds and Larson ran 5:00.34.

Less than two hours later, Pixler crushed the 800-meter mark by nearly 4 seconds in a time of 2:11.52 the fourth-fastest in NCAA Division II this season. Pixler was a part of three wins altogether, coming back to run in the distance medley relay to cap the meet. She had won the GNAC cross country title in the fall.

Essien (Fr., Portland, Or./Reynolds) claimed wins in both the 60 and 200 after entering as the No. 2 seed behind SPU teammate Nyema Sims (Fr., Portland, Or./Jefferson), who was runner-up in both. Essien hit the tape in a meet-record 7.73 in the 60 and was timed in 25.50 in the 200. She later ran a leg of the winning 1600 relay which established a new GNAC overall record in 3:58.68.

Sims was the Falcons' high scorer with 21 points over four events. In addition to Pixler and Essien, sprinter Jessica Hinton (Fr., Lake Stevens, Wa.) accounted for 18 points, taking third in the 60, 200 and 400.

Seattle Pacific's other wins came from Kelsey Cooley (Jr., Missoula, Mt.) in the 60 hurdles (9.30), Monica Anderson (Jr., Bremerton, Wa.) in the pole vault (11-0 1/4) and Karin Rohde (Jr., Bellingham, Wa./Mt. Baker), who claimed the 5000 for the second time in three years in a meet record of 18:17.35.

Teona Perkins (Sr., Kennewick, Wa.) was second in the high jumper by a half-inch after winning in 2006.

For the men, Justin Felt (Fr., Eugene, Or./Churchill) kept the long jump crown in SPU hands while Eddie Strickler (Sr., Richland, Wa.) added the indoor 800 to his outdoor title from last spring.

Felt's best jump was 22 feet, 3½ inches. Chris Randolph, now an assistant coach, had won the previous three years.

Strickler's victory came by the slimmest of margins -- just 0.01 seconds over Western's Sam Brancheau -- in 1:55.23. Strickler was the indoor runner-up a year ago. He also ran on the winning distance medley relay.

Of the women's team's 192 points, 106 was generated by the individual results of their freshmen. Northwest Nazarene was second with 104 points.

Earning all-conference honors by finishing among the top three or as winning relay members were: Jennifer Marsh in the 800, Kaitlin Rohde in the 5000, Victoria Perkins in the medley relay; Brian Cronrath in the men's mile and Ben Climer and Chad Meis in the medley relay.

The GNAC Last-Chance meet is Saturday at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor.
