SEATTLE (Feb. 16) Veronica Porte won the
vault and all-around as San Jose State earned a comfortable
decision over Seattle Pacific University in a gymnastics dual meet
Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.
With a season-high score of 193.625 the
Spartans (4-7) beat the Falcons (1-6), who totaled 190.275.
Porte won the vault with a season-best 9.750
and also took second place on bars (9.700) and floor (9.850). The
visitors' Alise Blackwell swung a score of 9.750 to win on bars
and Michelle Minotti got San Jose's other victory on beam (9.750).
Debra Huss (Sr., Orangevale, Ca.) capped the
Falcons' night on a high note, winning the floor exercise with her
highest count in three years, a 9.875. It ties for No. 7 all-time
at SPU.
Continuing her comeback for a preseason hand
fracture, Seattle Pacific's Sarah Sullivan (Sr., Salem, Or.) tied
for second on bars ( 9.725) and was third on floor (9.800).
Porte's four event sum was 38.900 with teammate
Jessica Koshnood runner-up at 38.650. Huss was third with 38.600.
San Jose State began pulling away during the
second and third rotations and won three of four events overall.
Seattle Pacific produced team season-highs on vault (48.275) and
floor (48.700) but counted three falls and could not manage above
47.000 on either bars nor beam.
SPU goes on the road for its next four
meetings, beginning with a triangular at Washington with Oregon
State next Friday night.
