SEATTLE (Feb. 1) After shattering the
schools three-point shooting record in their last game, the
Crusaders seemed well prepared to guard the perimeter. Seattle
Pacific, however, turned to its inside game and used a second half
surge to defeat Northwest Nazarene 79-56 in a Great Northwest
Athletic Conference womens basketball game Thursday night at
Brougham Pavilion.
Kelsey Hill (So., 6-2, Portland, Or./Portland
Christian) had game highs of 17 points and eight rebounds to lead
a balanced SPU attack. Frontcourt mate Rachel Strand (Sr., 6-0,
Shoreline, Wa../Kings) added 14 points and five rebounds as
the Falcons outscored the Crusaders 50-18 in the paint.
The Falcons (6-1 GNAC, 13-5), who set a school
record with 17 three pointers on 71 percent accuracy (17-24) in
their last outing, went 0-for-9 from behind the arc in the first
half and finished just 2-for-17 for the game. But the Falcons went
32-for-45 on the rest of their field goals and finished at 55
percent for the game, much thanks to the efficiency of Hill (7-11)
and Strand (7-8).
Jackie Hollands (Jr., 5-9, Oregon City, Or.),
the teams second leading scorer, was held to just four
points, but sparked the SPU defense with eight steals, just one
shy of the school record. The Falcons scored 23 points off 22
Nazarene turnovers.
After a back-and-forth first half in which no
team led by more than seven and finished with a two-point SPU
lead, the Falcons scored 15 straight points to cap off a 24-7
second-half opening run. That essentially put the game away as the
Falcons led by 21 with 8:27 left to play.
NNUs Danielle Dwello had 13 points and
six rebounds in the loss, but was held to just three points in the
second half. Northwest Nazarene (4-4, 10-9), which suffered its
fourth loss in the past five games, was held to just 25 points in
the final 20 minutes and shot just 36 percent for the game.
SPUs Jessie Christensen (Jr., 5-9,
Enumclaw, Wa.) led all reserves with 10 points, three rebounds and
three assists in 17 minutes off the bench. Daesha Henderson (Fr.,
5-8, Snohomish, Wa.) added nine points, all of them in second
half, in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Crusaders also got 11 points and five
rebounds from Kristin Hein in the loss.
The Falcons host cross-city rival Seattle
University in GNAC action Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
