SEATTLE (Jan. 27) Latasha Essien became
Seattle Pacific University's newest national qualifier and ran her
way to No. 2 on the Falcons' all-time indoor 60-meter list at the
Washington Invitational track and field meet Saturday.
In all, Seattle Pacific now has a combination
of seven automatic and provisional marks through the first two
meets. Jessica Pixler (Fr., Sammamish, Wa./Eastlake), already an
automatic qualifier in the mile, met the provisional standard
Saturday in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 14.47 seconds. She
was ninth.
Nyema Sims (Fr., Portland, Or./Jefferson) of
SPU finished fourth in the second finals section of the 60, just
ahead of Essien (Fr., Portland, Or./Reynolds) who was fifth. Both
Sims (7.69) and Essien (7.75) ran their best times in the
qualifying heats. Sims had set the school record of 7.63 seconds
two weeks ago.
In the 200, Sims won her heat in 25.39, good
for No. 2 on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and school
career list. Essien first in her heat (26.15) as well.

Spokane, Wa.North Central) winning her heat of the 400 in 59.85
and Karin Rohde (Jr., Bellingham, Wa./Mt. Baker) taking second in
her section of the mile in 5:03.77.
