Falcon Men Rally From 20 Down, But Fall in Overtime at Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Jan. 27) ­ After coming from 20 points down in the second half to force overtime, Seattle Pacific University finally succumbed to Central Washington, 98-91, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men¹s basketball game at Nicholson Pavilion Saturday night.

Lance Den Boer pumped in 38 points for the Wildcats (3-4, 8-10), who scored the final seven points of the game from the foul line.

Taking their only leads in the extra period, the Falcons (5-3, 12-7) twice turned the ball over and missed three-pointers in the final 91 seconds.

Marques Echols (Jr., 6-2, Seattle, Wa./Garfield-Peninsula CC) led SPU with a season-high 24 points and Dustin Bremerman (Sr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) added 22 before fouling out with 1:31 remaining.

The Falcons trailed by 19 at the half, 20 with 15:23 left in regulation and made up 10 points in the last 2:48. Bremerman started rush with a three, Rob Will (Jr., 6-10, Seattle, Wa./O¹Dea) helped with six points and Echols struck for a pair of treys in the final 7 seconds, including a buzzer-beater to send it into overtime.

Two free throws by Echols and a jumper from JoJay Jackson gave SPU a pair of two-point leads to start the overtime.

Den Boer hit a jumper to tie it at 89 and later made two free throws for a 94-91 edge with 26 seconds to go. Following a missed trey by Echols, Grant Assink sank two foul shots with 10 seconds left to clinch the win.

Central Washington never trailed in regulation and took a 57-37 lead on a deep jumper by Den Boer. He was 5 of 8 outside the arc and converted all 11 of his free throws.

Echols answered with four treys. Will finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The Wildcats shot 51 percent (32-63) and made 10 of 19 threes and 24 of 27 at the line. Seattle Pacific rebounded from a cold (32 percent) first half, ending at 44 percent (30-69).

Standing second in the GNAC at the halfway point, SPU plays its next three at home, beginning Thursday night against Northwest Nazarene.
