SEATTLE, Wa. (Jan. 19)—Debra Huss won the floor exercise and all-around competition, Danna Nelson finished first on balance beam and Brianna Schwartz won bars but it was not enough to lift Seattle Pacific University over UC Davis in team competition as the Aggies won a women’s gymnastics meet 191.175 to 189.225 Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The meet was both the season and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for the Falcons (0-1). UC Davis improved to 1-1 with the victory, after falling to San Jose State in its opener last week.

Huss (Sr., Orangevale, Ca./Bella Vista) danced her way to a 9.850 on floor en route to her all-around victory (38.725). The senior finished in a tie for second on beam with Davis’ Carrie Lujan (9.625) and swung fourth on the uneven bars (9.675). Huss’ vault score was her lowest of the night (9.575). The senior all-arounder was making a return from an ankle injury which sidelined her for much of 2006.

Nelson (So., Maple Valley, Wa./Tahoma) negotiated a 9.650 on beam for her first collegiate victory and Schwartz’ (So., Bonney Lake, Wa./Sumner) 9.725 bars routine landed her just ahead of teammate Ashley Domres (Jr., Phoenix, Az./Scottsdale Christian). The Aggies’ Brandi Forte tied with Domres for second on the unevens with a 9.700.

UC Davis’ Tanya Ho launched a 9.825 vault winner after the Aggies’ first rotation. Ho finished just a hair behind Huss in the all-around competition with 38.700. The Ags’ Lujan was second on vault with SPU’s Kristin Bryant (Sr., Anchorage, Ak./West Anchorage) third (9.775).

Event-wise, Davis held a slight edge on every apparatus but the uneven bars. Their highest total came on vault (48.700). Seattle Pacific’s 48.200 on vault marked its best event score.

The Falcons travel to San Jose for a quadrangular versus the host, Boise State and Utah State next Friday. Official start time is 7PM.
