Falcon Women Make It Four Straight; Stay Perfect in GNAC
January 18, 2007

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Jan. 18) – The fire alarm that delayed the start of the game was just a sign of things to come for Jackie Hollands and the red-hot Falcons. Hollands set the nets ablaze with a career-high 21 points, and Seattle Pacific scored a season high in points to defeat Alaska Fairbanks 85-73 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Hollands (Jr., 5-9, Oregon City, Or.) drained three straight three pointers during a key stretch early in the second half that sparked a 13-7 run to turn a five-point lead into an 11-point cushion with 14 minutes left to play.

Following a Fairbanks basket, Jessie Christensen (Jr., 5-9, Enumclaw, Wa.) and Jessie Menkens (Sr., 5-10, Battle Ground, Wa./Prairie) made back-to-back layups to put the Falcons up by double figures for good.

Hollands shot 8-for-10 from the field, including 5-for-7 from three-point range in leading the Falcons (4-0 GNAC, 10-4) to their fourth straight victory and their 63rd win in their last 65 home league contests. Her 21 points were also a team season best, and she also matched teammate Beth Christensen (Jr., 5-5, Enumclaw, Wa.) with a game-high seven assists.

Seattle Pacific scored eight of the game’s first 10 points and pushed that to a 10-4 lead, but the Nanooks (0-3, 5-10) answered with a 14-3 run to pull ahead by five, their largest lead of the game.

Hollands scored five points during a 12-3 run that put SPU back on top by six with 7:07 left in the first half, but Fairbanks recaptured the lead, 34-32, with 3:40 remaining before the break. Beth Christensen scored five straight points to put the Falcons back up by three, and gave SPU the lead for good.

Jessie Christensen finished with a career-high 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting and also grabbed four rebounds. Rachel Strand (Sr., 6-0, Shoreline, Wa./King’s) added 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in the win. Autumn Fielding (Sr., 5-9, Kennewick, Wa.) chipped in 10 points, three rebounds and three steals.

Sheena Brown scored 17 of her team-high 19 points in the first half to lead the Fairbanks attack, but was held to just 0-for-4 shooting in the second period. Kari Reabold added 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the loss. Joscelyn Shumate had 11 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench.

SPU’s Kelsey Hill (So., 6-2, Portland, Or./Portland Christian ) was just one point shy of her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Falcons shot 52 percent (34-65) for the game, their second best performance of the season. They also out-rebounded the Nanooks 36-28, including 14 offensive rebounds. Fairbanks shot 54 percent in the first half to keep pace, but dropped to 44 percent in the second half to finish at 49 percent for the game.

A large amount of chalk particles in a side gymnastics room on the main level of Brougham Pavilion triggered the building fire alarm 20 minutes prior to tip-off and delayed the start time by 10 minutes.

The Falcons host Alaska Anchorage in GNAC action Saturday at 7 p.m.
