SPU Women Cruise Past Saint Martin's to Stay Perfect in GNAC

SEATTLE (Jan. 13) ­ Rachel Strand led four Falcons in double figures with 15 points to help lead Seattle Pacific to an 82-49 victory over Saint Martin's in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (3-0 GNAC, 9-4), who led the entire way, maintained their perfect league record with their third straight victory. Saint Martin's dropped to 1-3 in the GNAC and 5-10 overall.

Strand (Sr., 6-0, Shoreline, Wa./King's), who shot 7-for-8 and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, had eight points and six rebounds in the first half, to help Seattle Pacific jump out to an early lead and a 40-24 advantage at halftime.

Kelsey Hill (So., 6-2, Portland, Or./Portland Christian) also got into the scoring act early. She knocked down 5-of-7 shots for 10 first-half points and finished with 14 overall along with seven rebounds.

The two post players helped SPU to advantages of 42-22 in points in the paint, 16-2 in second-chance points and 38-32 in rebounding.

Seattle Pacific scored the first four points of the game and jumped out to a 14-5 lead. Minutes later Autumn Fielding (Sr., 5-9, Kennewick, Wa.) and Jackie Hollands (Jr., 5-9, Oregon City, Or.) hit back-to-back threes during a 12-4 run that gave the Falcons a 17-point lead just 12 minutes into the contest.

SPU, who shot 60 percent in the first half, led by double figures the rest of the way.

Hollands finished with 14 points and six assists. Fielding scored 11. The two combined with Hill and Strand to shoot 64 percent (23-36) for the game. Overall, Seattle Pacific shot a season-high 56 percent (35-63), including 44 percent (7-16) from three-point range.

The Saints, who shot just 31 percent (18-58) for the game, got a game-high 16 points from Jamey Gelhar, but she was the only SMU player to score in double figures. Krissy Bassett had eight points and four rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.

The Falcons next host Alaska Fairbanks in GNAC action Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
