FAIRBANKS (Jan. 6) Seattle Pacific
University's bid for a rare road sweep in Alaska came up short
Saturday night as Jushay Rockett scored 20 points and had 14
rebounds in a 90-78 win by Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Northwest
Athletic Conference game at Patty Center.
The Falcons (1-1, 8-5), who had won four in a
row, were led by the 20 of Dustin Bremerman (Sr., 6-4, Yakima,
Wa./Eisenhower).
Shooting 63 percent from the field (35-56), the
Nanooks (1-1, 10-3) took command early, led by 10 at halftime and
continually repelled SPU rallies.
Seattle Pacific sliced the UAF lead to five
with 5:04 left. An 8-1 spurt was capped by Bremerman's
three-pointer, cutting the deficit to 70-65.
But Rushay maneuvered inside for a bucket on
the next possession and, later, jumpers by Steven Sandles and
Kenny Barker pushed the lead back to 10.
Rockett was strong underneath, hitting 9 of 12
shots. He also blocked six shots.
On a frigid night outdoors--temperatures
reached 30 below at game time)--the Falcons started cold. Alaska
bolted to a 13-1 lead behind Rockett's six points and never
trailed.
SPU, which was coming off a Thursday win at
Alaska Anchorage, has only swept an Alaska road trip four times in
23 tries.
Bremerman was effective on the drive but was
just 1-6 outside the arc. Rob Will (jr., 6-10, Seattle,
Wa./O'Dea), Rob Diederichs (Fr., 6-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood)
and Marques Echols (Jr., 6-2, Seattle, Wa./Garfield) each added 11
points.
Barker contributed 19 points and Sandles 16 for
UAF.
The Falcons shot a respectable 49 percent
(29-59) overall yet were out-rebounded 33-24.
SPU returns home to host Western Oregon
Thursday night in Brougham Pavilion. |
