SPU Women Bolster Offense in 2nd Half to Down Central Washington

SEATTLE, Wa. (Jan. 4)—Kelsey Hill had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Rachel Strand hit for 16 points and 11 rebounds as Seattle Pacific University staged a second half comeback in downing Central Washington 71-62 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (7-4/1-0) withstood a furious start by the Wildcats as Central (9-2/0-1) )raced out to a 21-6 lead over the first eight minutes. CWU led by double-digits until a Strand (6-0, Sr., Shoreline, Wa./King’s) lay-up cut Seattle Pacific’s defecit to nine with 2:09 left in the half.

Central headed into the locker room up five (36-31) and maintained its lead the first ten minutes of the second half as leading scorer Laura Wright made consecutive trips to the free-throw line in dropping in three of her 14 points.

With nearly 12 minutes left, the Falcons’ offense began to heat up, and a Strand lay-up at 9:09 capped a 6-0 run that awarded SPU its first lead of the game (48-47).

Seattle Pacific did not look back. Central was forced to foul and the Falcons hit a half-dozen free-throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Hill (6-2, So., Portland, Or./Portland Christian) led all scorers with 18 points on seven of nine shooting. Jackie Hollands (5-9, Jr., Oregon City, Or.) chipped in 11 points and passed out three assists.

Elyse Mengarelli scored 13 points in compliment to White’s total. Hanna Hull and Brandie Bounds each had 11.

Seattle Pacific dominated in the paint out-scoring CWU 44-14, and out-rebounded the Wildcats 41-33. Central connected on 37% of its field goals. SPU shot 42%.

The Falcons play next Saturday night (Jan. 6) at Western Oregon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7PM.
