December 12, 2006

Complete Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Dec. 12) Geoffrey Clayton ignited a late run as Cal State San Bernardino spoiled Seattle Pacific University's newly-minted No. 4 national ranking by beating the Falcons 86-66 Tuesday night at Coussoulis Arena.

The Falcons (4-2) trimmed an 11-point deficit to 60-58 with 8:06 remaining, but the Coyotes (3-2) responded with 18 unanswered points to pull away. It was the opening game of a four-game road trip for SPU.

Clayton scored six of the first eight points during the spree, including a three-pointer which gave Cal State a 76-64 advantage with 2:42 left. He finished with nine points. Ivan Johnson contributed six of his 17 during the same stretch.

Drew Matzen (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Lynnwood) led Seattle Pacific with 17 points and Rob Will (Jr., 6-10, Seattle, Wa./O'Dea) added 15 and eight rebounds.

Coming off a 10-day layoff for final exams, SPU started strong, taking a 10-point lead midway through the first half on a trey by Rob Diederichs (Fr., 6-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood), who had 14 points.

After Matzen's three made it 36-26 at the 5:15 mark, the Coyotes went on a 15-2 tear to take a 41-38 lead at intermission. They proceeded to score the first nine points of the second period.

Seattle Pacific shot only 39 percent in the final 20 minutes while San Bernardino hit 58 percent and committed just two turnovers. The Falcons missed seven straight shots and committed three turnovers during the CSSB late surge.

Matzen finished 5 of 8 from behind the arc and also had five assists. Dustin Bremerman, coming off a career-high 43 points, was held to just nine on 3-10 shooting.

The Falcons face No. 3-ranked Central Missouri Friday night in Las Vegas, and No. 15 Rollins the following afternoon.
