Seattle Pacific Men Fall Short in Second Upset Bid, 76-73
November 12, 2006

Complete Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. (Nov. 12) A last-minute rally by Seattle Pacific University fell just short as San Diego State held off the Falcons for a 76-73 win in the final round of the Shamrock Invitational men's basketball tournament Sunday night at McKeon Pavilion.

Although tied at halftime, Seattle Pacific was down by as many as 12 in the second half before mounting a late comeback. Dustin Bremerman (Sr., Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) drove for a layup and, 4 seconds later, stole the ball and scored again. That basket cut the Aztecs' advantage to 76-73 with 27 seconds left.

Another steal, by Jared Moultrie with 19 seconds to go, gave SPU the ball for a final shot to tie the game, but a three-pointer by Marques Echols missed with 3 seconds remaining.

Bremerman led all players with 34 points and averaged 27.0 points over the three-game tournament. None of the results counted for SPU but did for their Div. I opponents.

Mohammed Abukar led San Diego State (3-0) with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Brandon Heath had 20 points and three steals.

The Falcons, coming off a 76-68 upset of Murray State Saturday, overcame foul trouble to center Rob Will to lead by five midway through the first half and go into intermission tied at 34. Will fouled out after playing just 17 minutes.

A 10-1 spurt moved SDSU in front, 62-50, with 9 minutes left. Bremerman's three-point play trimmed the lead to 71-65 with 2:51 to go. He finished 13-24 from the field.

Drew Matzen (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Lynnwood) added 15 points. Seattle Pacific committed just 10 turnovers, helping to offset a 37-27 deficit in rebounds.

San Diego State, the defending Mountain West champion and NCAA tournament participant, shot 51 percent (23-45) to the Falcons' 42 percent (28-66).

Seattle Pacific opens regular season play Friday night, hosting Cal State L.A. in the nightcap of the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic.
