Falcon Men Upset D-1 Murray State, 76-68
November 11, 2006

Complete Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. (Nov. 11) Dustin Bremerman and Rob Will combined for 26 first-half points as Seattle Pacific University built a big lead and then went on to beat Murray State (Ky.) 76-68 in the second round of the Shamrock Invitational men's basketball tournament Saturday night at McKeon Pavilion.

Bremerman (Sr., Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) finished with 21 points and Will (Jr., 6-10, Seattle, Wa./O'Dea) had 19 as the Falcons posted their first victory over a Division I team in 20 years. The outcome counted for the Racers (0-2) yet was an exhibition for SPU.

Murray State, an NCAA tournament team and Ohio Valley champion last season, was paced by the 17 of Shawn Witherspoon.

Bremerman connected on four of his team's 10 three-pointers in the first half while Will, operating inside, converted 6-7 shots. The Falcons went on a 25-11 run in the final 11:33 of the opening period, to lead by 20 points at intermission and 22 early in the second half.

Murray State held SPU to 22-percent shooting in the final period, and closed within 59-50 with 9:30 remaining. But Brian Lynch (Sr., 6-2, Missoula, Mt.) answered with a jumper and Seattle Pacific did not allow the Racers to get any closer until the final two minutes, when it converted 9-10 free throws. Bremerman and Marques Echols (Jr., 6-2, Seattle, Wa./Garfield-Peninsula) each went 4-4 from the line.

The Falcons, who shot 55 percent (17-31) in the first period, finished at 41 percent (22-54) but committed eight fewer turnovers (12-20) than MSU, which shot 45 percent (27-60) and out-boarded the Falcons 41-29.

Drew Matzen (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Lynnwood) had 10 points and eight rebounds. Bremerman was 5-11 outside the arc and Will also blocked two shots.

Seattle Pacific's last win over a D-I was at Eastern Washington in 1986-87. It completes preseason play and the tournament Sunday night against San Diego State.
