MORAGA, Calif. (Nov. 10) -- Turnover-plagued
Seattle Pacific University opened its men's basketball preseason
by falling to host Saint Mary's, 71-60, in the first round of the
Shamrock Invitational at McKeon Pavilion Saturday night.
The Gaels survived a second-half rally by
holding the Falcons without a field goal for over 8 minutes while
putting together an 18-7 run.
Seattle Pacific's Dustin Bremerman (Sr., 6-4,
Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) led all scorers with 26 points, a dozen
coming off three-pointers. Rob Will (Jr., 6-10, Seattle,
Wa./O'Dea) added 16 plus 11 rebounds.
Saint Mary's was paced by the 18 of Brett
Collins and its bench outscored the SPU reserves 24-5.
After trailing by 14 early in the second
period, the Falcons charged back, cutting the deficit to 51-46
after a Bremerman trey and two free throws by Will. However, the
hosts gradually pulled away as SPU missed its next six shots and
committing six of their 26 turnovers.
Saint Mary's hit 44 percent (28-63) from the
field to 36 percent (17-47) for the Falcons. The win counts for
the Gaels but, under Division II rules, it was an exhibition for
SPU.
SPU plays Murray State Saturday. San Diego
State edged Murray 87-84 in the tournament's opening game.
