LA JOLLA, Ca. (Nov. 2)Janae Godoy scored
in the second period of overtime to lift No. 18 Seattle Pacific
University to a 1-0 victory over 11th-ranked Seattle University at
the NCAA Division II Far West Regional womens soccer playoff
Thursday evening at Triton Soccer Field.
Seattle Pacific (17-4-0) will play in the
Regional Championship Game Saturday afternoon on the campus of UC
San Diego against the host Tritons who defeated Western Washington
4-0 in the other semifinal game. The Far West winner advances to
play at the Midwest victor in a Nov. 11 quarterfinal.
After a marathon 107-minutes of scoreless
soccer, Godoy (Fr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) took a short pass
from teammate Sarah Martinez (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park
Christian) and slotted it to the right post for her third goal of
2006 (107:39).
The victory avenged a pair of losses to Seattle
University (15-3-2) including an 1-0 overtime loss in the regular
season finale Oct. 28. Seattle U won the regional title in 04
but did not qualify last year.
Midfielder Shannon Oakes (So., Boise, Id.)
started the scoring drive when she beat two SU defenders on a run
through the attacking third. The sophomore served the ball to
Martinez on the back post.
Martinez turned on a dime, and slotted the ball
to Godoy to end the match. Godoys strike was from close
range.
The goal was brilliant,
Seattle Pacific Head Coach Chuck Sekyra said. Tonight was an
intense battle and we beat a very good team. Our kids never let
up.
Tricia Loomis (Jr., Des Moines, Wa./Mount
Rainier) nearly won it for the Falcons in regulation. With 13:15
remaining, the junior took a free-kick from 50 yards that sailed
toward the upper right corner . SU keeper Kaitlyn Jackson pushed
it over the top of the framework for one of her five saves.
Overall, Seattle Pacific out-shot the Redhawks
17-12, including 3-2 in overtime. The Falcons took six corner
kicks to SUs 0.
Seattle Pacific keeper Katie Ruggles (Sr.,
Eugene, Or./South Eugene) registered five saves in earning her
ninth shutout.
The Falcons will be making their third
consecutive appearance in the region championship game, which
kicks-off Saturday (Nov. 4) at 1 p.m. Seattle Pacific has reached
the NCAA tournament in each of its four years under Sekyra, and
finished as runner-up in NCAA II in 2005.
