SPU Claims GNAC Volleyball Title Behind Given's Record Total

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Nov. 2) ­ Behind the school-record 32 kills of Alyssa Given, 12th-ranked Seattle Pacific University claimed its second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship by beating Western Washington in four games Thursday night at Carver Gym.

Shelby Gihring (Sr., Kent, Wa./Kentlake) and Angie Wodrich (Jr., Jr., Richland, Wa.) finished with 19 and 17 kills, respectively, for the Falcons (16-0, 24-2) who won the 18th straight match. They were unbeaten in GNAC play and have now won 27 straight league outings.

After splitting the first two games, SPU snapped a 10-match win string by the Vikings by scores of 30-24, 26-30, 30-28 and 30-24.

Given (Jr., Salinas, Ca.) cracked seven kills in the fourth game, including her team's final three points. She had shared the old record of 30 kills, and her 86 attacks attempts also established a new standard. Given aded 22 digs.

Jenna Von Moos (Sr., Stanwood, Wa.) finished with 71 assists­two short of her season high. SPU convert ed .197 on its attacks.

Jaime Anderson topped Western (13-2, 17-6) with 19 kills and Courtney Schneider had 49 digs. The Vikings hit .162 and out-blocked the visitors 14-5.5.

Seattle Pacific was in danger of falling behind before rallying to score the final four points of the third game. Given got the first two on kills and Torii Mount won it with a service ace. Mount had 33 digs.

It's the first outright GNAC title for the Falcons, who shared the crown with Central Washington last season.

NCAA Division II tournament bids will be announced Sunday night. The Falcons entered the week ranked fourth in the Pacific Region, with eight teams to receive berths.
