Kirk Shares GNAC Frosh of Year; Five Make All-GNAC in Women's Soccer
October 31, 2006

SEATTLE (Oct. 31) -- Alex Kirk of Seattle Pacific University shared the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year honor for women's soccer and was among five playoff-bound Falcons to earn all-conference accolades.

Kirk (Fr., Edmonds, Wa./Edmonds-Woodway) is currently fifth in league scoring with 20 points (8 goals, 4 assists) and shared the title with Western Washington defender Meghan Woodman.

SPU forward Sarah Martinez (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) was selected to the GNAC first team for the third year in a row, while midfielder Kara Hamby (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Mead) and defender Carolyn Nason (Sr., Lafayette, Co.) were repeaters from last year's first team.

Martinez leads the team in total points (23) despite missing three games due to injury. Nason and Hamby anchor a defense which has held 16 opponents to one goal or less.

Voted to the second team by the coaches were Kirk and midfielder Shannon Oakes (So., Boise, Id.). Kaya Stiegemeier (Fr., Rathdrum, Id.) and Meredith Teague (So., Redmond, Wa./Bellevue Christian) received honorable mention.

SPU faces GNAC champion Seattle University in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament Thursday in La Jolla, Calif.
