SEATTLE (Oct. 30) Seattle Pacific
University has reached the NCAA Division II men's soccer
tournament for a record 30th time and is seeded No. 2 in the Far
West Regional beginning Thursday (Nov. 2) at Carson, Ca. The
Falcons will face Cal State L.A. in a first-round game at 4 p.m.
Host Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-8-1) is the
top seed and plays Seattle University (11-7-0) at 7 Thursday. The
regional championship game will be 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Falcons (12-6-0), ranked No. 8 in last
week's national coaches poll, defeated Cal State L.A. (12-8-1) in
the teams' only previous meeting this season. SPU won 2-0 Sept. 2
on a neutral field behind goals from Andy Willis and Michael
Morris.
This marks the third time Seattle Pacific has
been pitted against CSLA in the postseason. The Falcons won 1-0 on
the road in 1992 and 7-0 at home in 1994.
It was Cal State Dominguez Hills' 2-0 victory
over Seattle Pacific Aug. 29 which helped the Toros earn the high
seed.
The Far West winner will face the Midwest
champion in the national quarterfinal round Nov. 11 or 12 at a
site to be determined. Fort Lewis (Co.), the defending national
champion, is the top seed in the Midwest.
A total of 32 teams received tournament berths
in this year's expanded bracket. The NCAA semifinals and
championship game are Nov. 16 and 18 in Pensacola, Florida.
