No. 9 Seattle U. Deals No. 20 SPU 1-0 Loss to Win GNAC Women's Soccer Championship
October 28, 2006

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE, Wa. (Oct. 28)—Leah Wymer scored on a breakaway in the first period of sudden death overtime as 9th-ranked Seattle University dealt No. 20 Seattle Pacific a 1-0 loss in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer match Saturday at Championship Field.

The win ensured the Redhawks (8-1-1/15-2-2) sole ownership of the GNAC title – their first since 2001 – and doused any hopes of Seattle Pacific (7-3-0/16-4-0) claiming a fifth consecutive championship. The Falcons won the GNAC from‘02-’05.

Wymer took a pass in stride in the middle third from teammate Kahlyn Keilty-Lucas in the 93rd minute. Wymer held off a Falcon defender on her inside hip over a 25-yard run to goal.

SPU keeper Katie Ruggles (Sr., Eugene, Or./South Eugene) dove left on Wymer’s diagonal shot to the far post, but could not get a hand on the ball (92:31).

The Falcons put together several scoring chances, the majority of them coming in the second half. Shannon Oakes’ (Fr., Boise, Id.) cross from the left corner with 28 minutes left in regulation found Janae Godoy (Fr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) roaming the box near the six yard line.

Redhawk keeper Kaitlyn Jackson smothered Godoy’s header. Jackson made two saves in the match.

Seattle Pacific’s Kayla Stiegemeier (Fr., Rathdrum, Id./Lakeland) forced a corner-kick with 12 minutes remaining. Jessica Gerstmann’s (Jr., Puyallup, Wa./Cascade Christian-Wash. St.) kick was batted down into heavy traffic by Jackson. Sarah Martinez (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) put a hard shot over top of the crossbar.

Overall, Seattle U out-shot the Falcons 11-5. Wymer, Keilty-Lucas and Cassy Smith each recorded a pair of shots. Ashley Porter had three.

Jasmine Wilson nearly won it for Seattle U in regulation when she unleashed a 30-yard blank that just missed the right corner at 67:07.

Ruggles finished with three saves. The Falcons had two corner-kicks to SU’s 0.

Both Seattle Pacific and Seattle University anxiously await announcement of the ’06 NCAA Tournament bracket, slated for Monday afternoon (Oct. 30). Seattle Pacific has been to the playoffs in each of its last three seasons under coach Chuck Sekyra.
