SEATTLE (Oct. 28) Two penalty kicks
early in each half proved to be the difference as Seattle
University downed No. 8-ranked Seattle Pacific 3-1 in the final
regular season men's soccer game for both teams Saturday at
Championship Field.
Losing back-to-back games for the first time in
three seasons, the Falcons (12-6-0) are likely to open NCAA
Division II tournament play Thursday. Bids are announced Monday.
The Redhawks (11-7-0) were awarded penalties in
the third and 47th minutes. Pat Thomas was taken down on a tackle
and converted the resulting spot kick at 2:39. A handball call led
to John Fishbaugher's score to open the second half.
Jason Cascio staked SU to a 3- lead in the 60th
minute, putting away a header following an SPU turnover.
Seattle Pacific, out-shot just 15-14, pulled a
goal back at 75:10, Michael Morris (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet)
redirected a shot by James Coggan (Jr., San Jose, Ca.). Moments
later, Jeff Hallenbeck's goalbound shot was cleared off the line
by a Redhawks defender.
With the win, Seattle U. earned a share of the
Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship, along with SPU.
The teams split the season series.
The Falcons, who have not won at Championship
Field since 1997, were coming off a 1-0 loss at No. 19 Incarnate
Word in San Antonio Tuesday.
Going into the week, Seattle Pacific was the
top seed in the Far West Region. Cal State Dominguez Hills, also
in contention for the right to host the regional tournament, plays
