Falcons Sweep UAF Vikings to Maintain GNAC Volleyball Lead

SEATTLE (Oct. 26) – Shelby Gihring smashed 20 kills, and Jenna Von Moos had 42 assists as Seattle Pacific cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (14-0 GNAC, 22-2), ranked No. 13 in NCAA II, won their 25th straight league match as well as their 18th straight at home and 16th straight overall.

The Falcons play their final regular season home match Saturday when they host Alaska Anchorage in GNAC action at 7:00 p.m. The Falcons finish the regular season next Thursday at Western Washington. Game scores were 30-26, 30-10, 30-25. Fairbanks (5-8, 6-14) lost for the third time in the past four matches.

Gihring (Sr., 5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) was the only player for either team to reach double figures in kills. She also tallied a .457 hitting percentage and had five digs. Von Moos (Sr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) also had three kills on .750 hitting and five digs.

Alyssa Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) had eight kills and seven digs in the win, and Angie Wodrich (Jr., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) finished with eight kills, nine digs, four service aces and three blocks. Torii Mount (So., Gresham, Or.) led all players with 13 digs.

UAF’s Jessica Hill had seven kills and four blocks in the loss. Katrina Jensen and Sarah Lowry added six kills apiece.

The Falcons hit .310 as a team and held the Nanooks to a .103 clip. The Falcons also had a 8-4 advantage in blocks.

The Falcons play their final regular season home match Saturday against Alaska Anchorage in GNAC action at 7:00 p.m. Gihring and Von Moos along with fellow seniors Tiffany Butac (Sr., 5-2, Pearl City, Hi./Hawaii Baptist) and Whitney Dibble (Sr., 6-1, Reno, Nv./Galena) will all be honored prior to the start of the match as the team’s graduating class. SPU concludes regular season play and goes for its second straight GNAC title next Thursday at Western Washington.
