SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 24) Held scoreless for
the first time in 15 games, Seattle Pacific University was dealt
an untimely defeat by 19th-ranked Incarnate Word, 1-0, Tuesday
night in a non-conference men's soccer game.
Entering the game as the frontrunner to host
next week's NCAA Division II Far West Regional, the No. 8 Falcons
(12-5-0) were beaten by a deflected goal in the 61st minute.
A heel flick by Nick Evans caromed off an SPU
defender and past keeper Kellen Rosten for the game's only score.
A low, driven 35-yard free kick by Incarnate Word's (13-3-3) Tom
Morrill had found Evans in the goalmouth.
Each team was the aggressor with the wind at
its back. Seattle Pacific out-shot the Cardinals 9-4 in the first
half and the visitors were on the defensive in the second period,
being out-shot 10-2.
It was the third loss in four games for SPU,
which had not been shut out since Aug. 29.
SPU concludes the regular season Saturday at
Seattle University. A win or draw would clinch the Great Northwest
Athletic Conference championship for the Falcons.
