SEATTLE (Oct. 20) Justin Abel scored the
first of three long-distance goals midway through the first half
and 8th-ranked Seattle Pacific University clinched at least a
share of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship with
a 3-1 win over Western Washington Friday night at Interbay
Stadium.
James Coggan (Jr., San Jose, Ca.) and Jeff
Hallenbeck (Jr., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) struck for goals less
than six minutes apart in the second half as the Falcons (12-4-0)
sent their seniors off with a victory in their final home game.
The Vikings' Jacob Haddock spoiled the shutout,
finishing a long, low right-wing cross from Matt Pele in the 86th
minute.
Each of the SPU goals were hit from outside the
box, beginning with Abel's (Jr., Snohomish, Wa.) looping 25-yard
shot in the 24th minute. It was his third goal of the season.
Coggan's sixth goal came on a 22-yard free kick
which found the left corner of the net, past a screened WWU keeper
Christian Warman, making it 2-0. Five minutes earlier from a near
identical position, Coggan had curled a spot kick just over the
crossbar.
In the 72nd minute, Hallenbeck won possession
35 yards from goal, wheeled and scored off the run from 18 yards.
It was the fifth straight loss for Western
Washington (2-16-1). Seattle Pacific finished 6-2 at home but
could possibly return to Interbay to host the Far West Regional
next month.
SPU finishes the regular season next week with
road games at San Antonio's Incarnate Word and Seattle University.
