SEATTLE (Oct. 14) Colin Rigby and Andy
Willis scored goals in the first 18 minutes and 6th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University went on to beat No. 15 Seattle University 2-1
in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at
Interbay Stadium Saturday night.
The victory was the eighth in nine games for
the Falcons (2-0-0, 11-3-0), who took over sole possession of
first place in the GNAC.
Jason Cascio pulled the Redhawks (1-1-0, 9-5-0)
a goal back in the 77th minute but was ejected moments later and
the visitors finished shorthanded.
Rigby (Sr., Mercer Island, Wa.) wasted little
time in putting SPU ahead. Thirty-eight seconds after the kickoff,
he leaped above Seattle U. keeper Chris Sorensen to head home a
high right-wing cross from Brandon Crutchfield (Fr., Snohomish,
Wa.). It was Rigby's sixth goal of the year and his fifth in the
last seven games.
On what proved to be the game-winning goal,
Willis (Sr., Gig Harbor, Wa.) worked a give-and-go with Rigby in
the box, knocking the return pass past Sorensen and then thumping
the ball in the net from 6 yards for his fifth goal.
Seattle Pacific threatened to make it 3-0 in
the 51st minute but a Rigby header hit the right post.
Shortly after SPU goalie Kellen Rosten (Jr.,
Colo. Springs, Co.) went full stretch to his left to parry a drive
by John Fishbaugher, the Redhawks converted a corner kick.
Fishbaugher lifted the ball into the middle of the box, where
Cascio headed in his 12th goal of the season at 76:28.
Cascio earned his second yellow card of the
game less than three minutes later, forcing Seattle U. to play the
rest of the way with 10 men. It was the Redhawks' third loss in
four games.
SPU continues its home stand Monday night,
hosting Simon Fraser.
