No. 15 Seattle Pacific Scores Convincing Volleyball Win in City Showdown

SEATTLE (Oct. 7) – Alyssa Given smashed a match-high 17 kills to lead nationally ranked Seattle Pacific to an easy 3-0 sweep of cross-city rival Seattle University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (10-0 GNAC, 18-2), who trailed only once the entire match (1-0 in Game 2), scored seven of the first nine points of each game to go onto a 30-21, 30-15, 30-21 victory. It was the 12th straight victory for 15th-ranked SPU, who snapped Seattle University’s (3-5 GNAC, 12-7) two-match winning streak.

Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) was the only player to record double figures in kills. She also tallied a .308 hitting percentage. The Falcons hit .224 as a team and held SU to a .009 percentage.

Rachel Biornstad (Jr., 6-0, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) added eight kills on a .353 hitting percentage, four blocks and three service aces for the Falcons, who won their 21st straight conference match and 15th straight at home. Shelby Gihring (Sr., 5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) and Angie Wodrich (Jr., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) chipped in with seven kills each.

SPU setter Jenna Von Moos (Sr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) had four kills and a match-high 39 assists in the win. Tiffany Butac (Sr., 5-2, Pearl City, Hi./Hawaii Baptist) led all players with 24 digs.

Nikole Thompson led the Redhawks with eight kills and 10 digs. Marisa Vierra added 23 assists and 11 digs in the loss.

The Falcons finished with nearly twice as many kills as the Redhawks (48-26) and alos enjoyed a 10-0 advantage in aces.

The Falcons complete a three-match homestand Thursday night against No. 17 Central Washington in a GNAC contest at 7:00 p.m.
