SPU Women's Soccer Suffers First Consecutive Defeats in Five Years
October 3, 2006

Complete Box Score

BELLINGHAM (Oct. 3) Absorbing its first back-to-back defeats in nearly five years, Seattle Pacific University was beaten by Western Washington 2-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Orca Field.

Getting goals from Katie Weber and Amanda Font in the first 16 minutes, the Vikings (4-1-0, 9-3-1) beat the 19th-ranked Falcons (3-2-0/10-3-0) for the first time in 11 tries.

Jeanne Webster (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Bothell) pulled SPU a goal back just before halftime but the visitors could not capitalize further on advantages of 21-6 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks.

Brittany Martin-Gegax made four saves for Western and the crossbar stopped by shots by the Falcons' Shannon Oakes and Julia Kern in either half.

Seattle Pacific was coming off a 1-0 home loss to Seattle University which had snapped a 47-game GNAC unbeaten streak. The Falcons had not lost consecutive games since the end of their inaugural season. They were NCAA Division II runners-up a year ago.

Weber and Font scored less than three minutes apart, with the latter beating SPU keeper Katie Ruggles (Sr., Eugene, Or.) from 25 yards.

Webster converted a corner kick from Jessica Gerstmann (Jr., Puyallup, Wa./Cascade Christian) in the 42nd minute.
