BELLINGHAM (Oct. 3) Absorbing its first
back-to-back defeats in nearly five years, Seattle Pacific
University was beaten by Western Washington 2-1 in a Great
Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at
Orca Field.
Getting goals from Katie Weber and Amanda Font
in the first 16 minutes, the Vikings (4-1-0, 9-3-1) beat the
19th-ranked Falcons (3-2-0/10-3-0) for the first time in 11 tries.
Jeanne Webster (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Bothell)
pulled SPU a goal back just before halftime but the visitors could
not capitalize further on advantages of 21-6 in shots and 7-0 in
corner kicks.
Brittany Martin-Gegax made four saves for
Western and the crossbar stopped by shots by the Falcons' Shannon
Oakes and Julia Kern in either half.
Seattle Pacific was coming off a 1-0 home loss
to Seattle University which had snapped a 47-game GNAC unbeaten
streak. The Falcons had not lost consecutive games since the end
of their inaugural season. They were NCAA Division II runners-up a
year ago.
Weber and Font scored less than three minutes
apart, with the latter beating SPU keeper Katie Ruggles (Sr.,
Eugene, Or.) from 25 yards.
Webster converted a corner kick from Jessica
Gerstmann (Jr., Puyallup, Wa./Cascade Christian) in the 42nd
minute.
Seattle Pacific resumes play Saturday in
Phoenix against Grand Canyon.
