SEATTLE (Sept. 29) Scoring two
second-half goals, James Coggan lifted 8th-ranked Seattle Pacific
University to its sixth straight win, 2-0 over Regis in a
non-conference men's soccer game Friday night at Interbay Stadium.
It was the first shutout in five games and
fifth overall for the Falcons (9-2-0), who now play their next
three on the road.
After 50 fruitless minutes of trying pry open
the Rangers' defense, Seattle Pacific finally broke the scoring
ice shortly after intermission.
Andy Willis (Sr., Gig Harbor, Wa.) weaved his
way across the top of the box, drawing the last defender away from
Coggan (Jr., San Jose, Ca./Valley Christian), who then took a
short feed and blasted a 15-yard shot inside the left post.
Coggan's second goal and fourth of the year
sealed the verdict with 2:05 remaining. A long free kick from Josh
Burnside (Fr., Black Diamond, Wa./Kennedy) was nodded down by Jeff
Hallenbeck (Jr., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) for Coggan to finish from
5 yards.
The Falcons kept Regis keeper Trevor Steege
busy, peppering him with 25 shots, requiring 10 saves. Alec Nelson
of SPU twice forced Steege to make reaction stops, including a
point-blank blast with 10 minutes left.
The Rangers tested SPU goalie Kellen Rosten
(Jr,, Colorado Springs, Co./Doherty) with six shots but he needed
to make only one routine save.
The loss extended the Regis (2-8-1) winless
streak to six games.
SPU returns to action Thursday night at
UC-Colorado Springs.
