No. 5 SPU Women Finish Road Trip With 2-0 Win at Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Ca. (Sept. 18)—Sarah Martinez and Alex Kirk each scored goals in the first half to lead No. 5-ranked Seattle Pacific University to a 2-0 non-conference win at Cal State San Bernardino Monday afternoon.

Seattle Pacific improved to 7-1 with the victory; The Coyotes dropped to 1-7.

Martinez (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) took a cross from Jessica Gerstmann (Jr., Puyallup, Wa./Cascade Christian) and put it past Coyote keeper Laura Lyons at 20:58. Martinez has a team high five goals on the season.

Just before intermission (39:51), Kirk (Fr., Edmonds, Wa./Edmonds-Woodway) hit net from 18-yards with assistance from Kara Hamby (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Mead).

The Falcons out-shot Bernardino an overwhelming 18-4, and earned a pair of corner kicks to the Coyotes’ zero. SPU keeper Katie Ruggles (Sr., Eugene, Or./South Eugene) made one save; Lyons finished the afternoon with 10.

Seattle Pacific returns to its home turf of Interbay to host a four-game home stand Thursday (Sept. 21). Kick-off against Northwest Nazarene is scheduled for 7PM. The Falcons will put a 45 (41-0-4) game Great Northwest Athletic Conference unbeaten streak to the test.
