Falcon Men Claim GNAC Opener, Win Third Men's Soccer Match in Row

BELLINGAHM (Sept. 16) ­Michael Morris staked Seattle Pacific University to an early lead, and the Falcons scored a season-high four goals in defeating Western Washington 4-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday night at Orca Field.

Andy Willis (Sr., Gig Harbor, Wa./Gig Harbor), Alec Nelson (Fr., Lynnwood, Wa./Meadowdale) and Colin Rigby (Sr., Mercer Island, Wa.) tallied second-half goals for SPU (6-2-0), which won its third straight to finish with just one loss on a six-game road trip.

Seventeen minutes into the match, Morris (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) took a pass from James Coggan (Jr., San Jose, Ca.). and drilled the ball past Viking goalie Christian Warman from 12 yards.

Willis and Nelson combined the break the game open shortly after intermission. Willis chipped over Warman for a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute.

A mishandled ball by Warman left an open net for Nelson in the 64th.

Seattle Pacific struck again in the 72nd minute. Rigby unleashed an 18-yard shot high into the corner after corralling a loose ball.

Western Washington (1-8-0) finished strong, hitting the post once and then averting a shutout on Jacob Haddock's goal with 9:08 remaining.

The Falcons held a 16-15 edge in shots and twice hit the goal frame.

SPU opens a three-game home stand Friday night by hosting Grand Canyon.
