Two Races, Two Wins; Falcons' Pixler Takes Sundodger

Men       Women

SEATTLE (Sept. 16) Setting the pace virtually wire to wire, Seattle Pacific University's Jessica Pixler won for the second time in as many outings at the Sundodger Open cross country meet Saturday at Lincoln Park.

Pixler (Fr., Sammamish, Wa./Eastlake), breaking in front during the first mile, ran the 6000 meters in 21 minutes, 35 seconds and helped the Falcons finish a close second to defending champion Simon Fraser, 71-59. Rebecca Johnstone of the Clan was runner-up in 21:38.

Seattle Pacific's placement was encouraging, given that Chico State, the No. 5 team in NCAA Division II, was third.

Pixler, who also is a member of the SPU soccer team, won last week's Emerald City Invitational in her maiden race.

Mary Moriarty (So., Seattle, Wa./Ballard) was 10th (22:13), Karin Rohde (Jr., Bellingham, Wa./Mt. Baker) 13th (22:24) and Jane Larson (Fr., Fall City, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) 16th (22:34).

David Kiplagat of Alaska Anchorage was a runaway victor in the men's open in 24:38. The Falcons' top man over the 8k course was Bjorn Bostrom (Sr., LaConner, Wa./Bellingham) in 48th (26:12). Doug Gibson (Sr., Yakima, Wa.) sustained an ankle injury during the race and cold not continue. He was among the top 25 harriers at the time.

Chico State won the men's team title, 80-98 over Western Washington. SPU was 10th (296) and fourth among Great Northwest Athletic Conference squads.

Next Saturday the SPU teams will be in Lacey, Wash., for the Saint Martin's Open.
