MONMOUTH, Or. (Sept. 13)Shannon Oakes had
the game-winning goal and tallied an assist on the Falcons
first score as No. 5 Seattle Pacific University came from behind
to beat Western Oregon 2-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic
Conference womens soccer game Thursday afternoon in
Monmouth.
The Falcons (6-1-0/1-0-0) upped their
conference unbeaten streak to 45 games (41-0-4) with the victory;
Western Oregon dropped to 4-2-1/0-1-1. Seattle Pacific was picked
by unanimous vote to repeat as GNAC champion in a preseason
coaches poll.
Oakes (So., Boise, Id./Boise) took a Jessica
Gerstmann (Jr., Puyallup, Wa./Cascade Christian) pass and put it
past Wolves keeper Ally Meyer in the 70th minute of play (69:47)
for the game-winner.
The sophomore midfielder helped knot the score
at one apiece at 53:03 when her cross found the head of Sarah
Martinez (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian). Martinez has
four goals to lead the team.
Meyer garnered 10 saves on the afternoon;
Seattle Pacific keeper Katie Ruggles (Sr., Eugene, Or./South
Eugene) registered two.
Western Oregons Sarah Skotte opened
scoring in the third minute, beating Ruggles from 10-yards on a
one-touch shot with assistance from Liorah Ruitzel (2:27). Despite
being out shot 15-3 in the opening half, the Wolves went into the
locker room at intermission with a 1-0 advantage.
Seattle Pacific shot 22 times on the match to
WOUs seven, and held a 12-0 advantage on corner-kicks.
SPU takes to the field in a non-conference
match-up against Cal State San Bernardino next. Kick-off is
scheduled for 3PM on Monday (Sept. 18). The Falcons return to
their home turf of Interbay to host a four game home stand
beginning Sept. 21.
