18th-Ranked Falcons Begin Title Defense With Win; 12th Straight in GNAC

ANCHORAGE, Ak. (Sep. 7) Angie Wodrich had a match-high 15 kills and 13 digs to help lead Seattle Pacific to a 3-1 victory over host Alaska Anchorage on the opening night of the 2006 Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball season.

The Falcons (1-0 GNAC, 9-2) dropped the first game of the match before winning the next three. Game scores were 28-30, 30-18, 30-23, 30-25. Seattle Pacific, ranked No. 18 in NCAA II, won its 12th straight league match dating back to the team’s 2005 league championship season. Anchorage fell to 0-1, 3-6.

Wodrich (Jr., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) opened with SPU’s first point of the match and also ended a late Anchorage rally with a kill for the final point of the match. The Falcons led 29-20 in the fourth and final game, but the Seawolves scored five straight points before Wodrich ended things.

Alyssa Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) added 14 kills, five digs and a pair of block assists in the victory. Shelby Gihring (Sr., 5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) chipped in nine kills, and Jessica Bettencourt (5-11, South Lake Tahoe, Ca.) eight.

SPU setter Jenna Von Moos (Jr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) led all players with 43 assists.

Heather Lyons led the Seawolves with 10 kills in the loss. Paepaetele Poasa added eight kills and 14 digs.

The Falcons finished with a .183 hitting percentage, below their season average, but held Anchorage to just .096 for the match. Seattle Pacific benefited from 16 UAA service errors.

The Falcons next face Alaska Fairbanks in a GNAC match Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
