September 6, 2006

Complete Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 6) Giving up two early goals, Seattle Pacific University was beaten by San Francisco State, 3-1, in a men's soccer game Wednesday at Cox Stadium.

The Gators (2-2-0) stunned the Falcons (3-2-0) by taking a 2-0 lead after 13 minutes to earn their first victory in a 12-game series dating back to 1977.

Justin Abel (Jr., Snohomish, Wa.) pulled SPU a goal back in the 28th minute , and Michael Morris (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) nearly tied it in the 32nd minute, hitting the post. Otherwise the visitors were unable to take advantage of a 26-16 advantage in shots.

It was Abel's second goal in as many games, and came off an assist from Brandon Crutchfield (Fr., Snohomish, Wa.).

San Francisco State capitalized on a size mismatch during a corner kick to take the early lead after 3 minutes, 22 seconds on Matt Pederson's header. Wes Whitt then converted a breakaway at 12:07.

The game's final goal came from Casey Poston at 57:11, making SFSU the first SPU opponent in 35 games to score three times. The defense had allowed only three goals in the first four outings.
