Loomis’ Free Kick Lifts No. 2-Falcons Over Sonoma 3-2
September 4, 2006

Complete Box Score

ROHNERT PARK, Ca. (Sept. 4)—Tricia Loomis lofted a 30 yard free kick to the right corner of the net for the game-winning goal in the second half of play to lift No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific University to a 3-2 win over Sonoma State in a non-conference women’s soccer game at the Seawolf Classic Monday afternoon in Rohnert Park.

The victory saw Seattle Pacific’s record improve to 4-1-0 after SPU suffered a rare defeat in the opening match of the tournament that broke a 60 game regular season unbeaten streak. Sonoma dropped to 2-2-0.

Loomis (Jr., Des Moines, Wa./Mount Rainier) beat Seawolf keeper Vanessa Merced for the final margin in the 69th-minute (68:31). Earlier, the junior forward had crushed a half-volley from near the top of the box to give the Falcons a 2-0 edge heading into the locker room at intermission. Loomis shot just twice on the afternoon.

Shots were nearly even with Seattle Pacific owning a slight advantage at 10-8. Sonoma managed a half-dozen corner kicks to SPU’s two. Fouls were 12-8, Sonoma.

The Seawolves Courtney Oates opened match scoring at 2:02, when she one-touched Megan Catton’s 30-yard diagonal cross past Falcon keeper Katie Ruggles (Sr., Eugene, Or./South Eugene).

Ruggles and the SPU defense combined for a single save in the victory; Merced had three.

Oates struck again at 53:19 when Khyra Buchanan’s free kick found a rare header-to-header combination play between Lindsay Catton and Oates.

Kara Hamby (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Mead) buried a penalty kick for Seattle Pacific’s other score (31:02). Both Hamby and Loomis have two goals on the season.

The Falcons meet with Notre Dame de Namur in a non-conference kick-off Thursday (Sept. 7) at 4PM. Seattle Pacific begins Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Sept. 13, and will put a 44 conference game unbeaten streak to test.
