SPU Men Beat No. 17 Sonoma State for Soccer Tourney Title

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. (Sept. 4) ­ James Coggan scored one goal and added an assist, leading 9th-ranked Seattle Pacific University to the Seawolf Classic title with a 3-0 win over No. 17 Sonoma State Monday.

Colin Rigby (Sr., Mercer Island, Wa.) and Justin Abel (Jr., Snohomish, Wa.) scored goals less than five minutes apart in the first half for the Falcons (3-1-0).

Kellen Rosten (Jr., Colorado Springs, Co.) made four saves to earn his third shutout in four games. Rosten's biggest stop came with the game still scoreless in the 25th minute, as he smothered a point-blank drive by the Seawolves' Nathan Medina.

Shortly after entering the game, Rigby opened the scoring in the 27th minute as Coggan cut the ball back from the endline and Rigby smashed it under the keeper from 8 yards. In the 32nd minute, Abel ran onto a through pass from Michael Morris (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) and beat Brook Johnson from 14 yards.

Coggan (Jr., San Jose, Ca.) put the game out of reach in the 60th minute, turning an firing inside the left post from 18 yards.

The two teams each attempted 13 shots, although eight of Seattle Pacific's were on target to Sonoma's four.

The Falcons' six-game road trip continues Wednesday at San Francisco State.
