18th-Ranked Falcons Endure Two in Mile-High Volleyball Tournament

DURANGO, Co. (Sep. 2) Alyssa Given tallied 41 kills and Jenna Von Moos 114 assists as nationally ranked Seattle Pacific ground out a pair of victories Saturday in the final day of the Hampton Inn Classic, hosted by Fort Lewis College.

Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) led the 18th-ranked Falcons (8-2) in kills in both victories. She recorded 20 kills to help SPU squeak past Montana State Billings 30-28, 20-30, 30-23, 23-30, 15-12. Later in the day, Given picked up 21 kills on a .271 hitting percentage as SPU got past Dixie State 30-26, 26-30, 30-15, 30-23.

The Falcons finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, their only loss coming to undefeated Fort Lewis.

Von Moos (Jr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) finished with 60 assists and 11 digs in the victory over Billings. Rachel Biornstad (Jr., 6-0, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) added 14 kills and seven blocks. True freshman Jessica Bettencourt (5-11, South Lake Tahoe, Ca.) chipped in with 16 kills and a .324 hitting percentage.

Tiffany Butac (Sr., 5-2, Pearl City, Hi./Hawaii Baptist) led the back row with 20 digs, and Angie Wodrich (Jr., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) added 17.

Alicia Cazemier had 17 kills and hit .229 in the loss for the Yellowjackets.

The Falcons hit .177 as a team and also tallied 16 blocks.

In the second contest, SPU hit .225 to go along with 12 blocks and 72 digs in a four-game victory over Dixie State.

Given finished with a match-high 21 kills and a .271 hitting percentage. Nikki Finley (Fr., 5-9, Highlands Ranch, Co./Mountain Vista) added 17 kills on a .289 hitting percentage.

Von Moos finished with 54 assists and nine blocks, and Biornstad added nine kills and eight blocks. Butac led all players with 29 digs as SPU held Dixie State to a .067 hitting percentage.

Seattle Pacific opens its Great Northwest Athletic Conference title defense Thursday at Alaska Anchorage at 8:00 p.m. The Falcons finish the two-match Alaska trip Saturday night at Alaska Fairbanks.
