DURANGO, Co. (Sep. 1) Alyssa Given recorded 25 kills and Rachel Biornstad had 22 as Seattle Pacific split a pair of matches Friday in the opening day of the Hampton Inn Classic, hosted by Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO.

The 18th-ranked Falcons (6-2) picked up their sixth straight win of the season with a 30-19, 30-23, 30-20 sweep of Eastern New Mexico (3-3) in the morning). However, the Falcons fell to tournament host Fort Lewis (6-0) 30-22, 30-28, 30-27 later in the day. The unranked Skyhawks remained perfect on the season after winning just five matches all of last season.

Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) exploded for 14 kills and a .357 hitting percentage in the first match. Biornstad (Jr., Kent, Wa./Kentlake) chipped in with 11 kills and a .343 hitting percentage.

The Falcons hit .255 collectively and held Eastern New Mexico to negative .029, the lowest by an SPU opponent this season. The Falcons also dominated the defensive side of the net with nine blocks.

The hot-hitting Falcons were cooled off by Fort Lewis, who beat SPU at its own game. The Skyhawks recorded a .277 hitting percentage and had eight blocks.

Biornstad and Given led Seattle Pacific with 11 kills apiece.

Nicole Schwab had 11 kills on .526 hitting for Fort Lewis. Sara Feehan led all players with 13 kills in the win.

The Falcons finish tournament play tomorrow with a pair of matches against Dixie State and Montana State Billings. SPU then opens its Great Northwest Athletic Conference title defense with a pair of matches in Alaska Thursday and next Saturday.
