No. 2 Ranked SPU Women Cruise to 3-0 Win Over Monterey Bay
August 26, 2006

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE, Wa. (Aug. 26)—Alex Kirk scored her first collegiate goal just over a minute into the match as No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific University cruised to a 3-0 win over non-conference foe Cal State Monterey Bay in a women’s soccer match Saturday afternoon at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (2-0) set a school record for single match shots as they peppered the Otters’ goal with 31, eclipsing the previous record of 26 set versus Montana State Billings in 2003.

Kirk (Fr., Edmonds, Wa./Edmonds-Woodway) kicked off scoring at 1:09 off a well played thru ball from teammate Sarah Martinez (Jr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) from near the top of the penalty box. Kirk beat diving Otter keeper Erika Ulfelder down the center of the goal, from 12 yards.

Seattle Pacific went into the locker room at intermission up 2-0, after Meredith Teague (So., Redmond, Wa./Bellevue Christian) curled her corner-kick from the left side into the far corner (19:32). Midfielder Kara Hamby (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Mead) dialed long distance to cap match scoring in the 72nd-minute, unassisted from 30 yards.

Ulfelder was busy over the course of the afternoon, and recorded seven saves including a trio of shots from Shannon Oakes (So., Boise, Id.), Kayla Steigemeier (Fr., Rathdrum, Id./Lakeland) and Martinez in the middle third of the second half. Ulfelder pushed a 16-yard rocket from Steigemeier into the crossbar in the 53rd minute.

Cal State Monterey Bay managed just a single shot in the game. Falcon keepers Katie Ruggles (Sr., Eugene, Or./South Eugene) and Jesslyn Rahm (Fr., Eugene, Or./South Eugene) split time in goal, Rahm gathering in the lone save.

The Falcons (2-0) moved their regular season unbeaten streak to 59 games with the victory. SPU will put its streak to the litmus test Tuesday night, when 19th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills travels to Interbay. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00.
