18th-Ranked Falcons Knock Off 13th-Ranked Hawaii Pacific; Finish Volleyball Tournament 3-1
August 26, 2006

Complete Box Scores
vs. UH Hilo        vs. Hawaii Pacific

Hilo, Hi. (Aug. 26) Alyssa Given had 17 kills and 10 digs to help lead Seattle Pacific to a 3-0 sweep of nationally ranked Hawaii Pacific Saturday evening to finish up the Hawaiian Style Classic, hosted by Hawaii Hilo.

Late last night, the 18th-ranked Falcons took care of tournament host Hawaii Hilo, also by a 3-0 sweep, to finish 3-1 in tournament play to start the season. Seattle Pacific’s only loss came to 21st-ranked BYU-Hawaii.

The Falcons came out on fire against the No. 13 team in all of NCAA Division II. SPU held the Sea Warriors to just five kills in the first game and cruised to a 30-14, 30-27, 30-28 win.

Rachel Biornstad (Jr., 6-0, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) and Angie Wodrich (Jr., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) added 12 kills and five blocks each in the victory.

Barbara Martin had 14 kills and hit for a .387 percentage, but was the only bright spot for Hawaii Pacific, who will be out for revenge when the team visits Brougham Pavilion Tuesday afternoon for a nonleague match. No other Sea Warrior recorded more than five kills, and the team combined for a dismal .062 hitting percentage.

The Falcons hit .229 as a team and finished with 9.5 blocks. Setter Jenna Von Moos (Sr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) tallied five kills on .556 hitting and recorded a match-high 42 assists. Tiffany Butac (Sr., 5-2, Pearl City, Hi./Hawaii Baptist) led all players with 23 digs.

Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) was also the catalyst for the SPU attack in its victory over Hilo last night. She led all players with 22 kills and hit at a .354 clip in the victory.

Shelby Gihring (Sr., 5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) added 14 kills, and Wodrich tallied nine kills and 12 digs. Butac again took top digs honors with 21.

Taina Savage had 20 kills and eight digs for Hilo.

Tuesday’s match against Hawaii Pacific marks the 2006 home opener for the Falcons. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. SPU faces Hawaii Hilo the following evening at 7:00 p.m.
