August 25, 2006

Complete Box Scores
vs. BYU-Hawaii         vs. Chaminade

Hilo, Hi. (Aug. 25) Alyssa Given smashed a match-high 21 kills and hit at a .326 clip to lead nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 3-1 victory over Chaminade Friday afternoon in the second day of the Hawaiian Style Classic, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo. Late last night, the 18th-ranked Falcons fell to No. 21 BYU-Hawaii in the season opener for both teams.

With Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) and Shelby Gihring (Sr., 5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) spearheading the offense, the Falcons cruised past Chaminade 30-21, 21-30, 31-29, 30-23.

Gihring added 15 kills and led all hitters with a .424 percentage. The Falcons finished with a .247 hitting percentage as a team.

Angie Wodrich (Jr., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) added 13 kills, 10 digs, six blocks and four service aces in the victory. Tiffany Butac (Sr., 5-2, Pearl City, Hi./Hawaii Baptist) chipped in a match-high 16 digs, and setter Jenna Von Moos (Sr., 5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) led all players with 48 assists to go along with five kills and three blocks.

Trina Kauliakomoa led the Silverswords with 16 kills on .208 hitting and 11 digs. Evelyn Bluthenthal added 15 kills and hit at a .235 clip, but the rest of the team combined for just .041 hitting. The Falcons tallied 11 blocks in holding Chaminade to a .135 hitting percentage.

Last night Given and Wodrich recorded 10 kills apiece, but the hard-hitting Falcon attack was held at bay as BYU-Hawaii’s defense helped lead the team to a 30-25, 30-27, 30-24 sweep. The Falcons were held to a .063 hitting percentage in the loss.

Hawaii’s Lesina Funaki and Michelle Peters had 12 kills each in the win to help the Seasiders overcome 16 service errors. Funaki also recorded a team-high 17 digs.

Butac led all players with 20 digs for the Falcons.

The loss snapped SPU’s 11-match regular season winning streak, and was the first season opening loss for the Falcons in four seasons.

The Falcons face tournament host Hawaii Hilo later tonight at 10:30 pm Pacific time. SPU concludes tournament play tomorrow evening against 13th-ranked Hawaii Pacific. That match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm.
