Hilo, Hi. (Aug. 25) Alyssa Given smashed a
match-high 21 kills and hit at a .326 clip to lead
nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 3-1 victory over Chaminade
Friday afternoon in the second day of the Hawaiian Style Classic,
hosted by Hawaii-Hilo. Late last night, the 18th-ranked Falcons
fell to No. 21 BYU-Hawaii in the season opener for both teams.
With Given (Jr., 5-10, Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame)
and Shelby Gihring (Sr., 5-10, Kent, Wa./Kentlake) spearheading
the offense, the Falcons cruised past Chaminade 30-21, 21-30,
31-29, 30-23.
Gihring added 15 kills and led all hitters with
a .424 percentage. The Falcons finished with a .247 hitting
percentage as a team.
Angie Wodrich (Jr., 5-10, Richland, Wa.) added
13 kills, 10 digs, six blocks and four service aces in the
victory. Tiffany Butac (Sr., 5-2, Pearl City, Hi./Hawaii Baptist)
chipped in a match-high 16 digs, and setter Jenna Von Moos (Sr.,
5-10, Stanwood, Wa.) led all players with 48 assists to go along
with five kills and three blocks.
Trina Kauliakomoa led the Silverswords with 16
kills on .208 hitting and 11 digs. Evelyn Bluthenthal added 15
kills and hit at a .235 clip, but the rest of the team combined
for just .041 hitting. The Falcons tallied 11 blocks in holding
Chaminade to a .135 hitting percentage.
Last night Given and Wodrich recorded 10 kills
apiece, but the hard-hitting Falcon attack was held at bay as
BYU-Hawaiis defense helped lead the team to a 30-25, 30-27,
30-24 sweep. The Falcons were held to a .063 hitting percentage in
the loss.
Hawaiis Lesina Funaki and Michelle Peters
had 12 kills each in the win to help the Seasiders overcome 16
service errors. Funaki also recorded a team-high 17 digs.
Butac led all players with 20 digs for the
Falcons.
The loss snapped SPUs 11-match regular
season winning streak, and was the first season opening loss for
the Falcons in four seasons.
The Falcons face tournament host Hawaii Hilo
later tonight at 10:30 pm Pacific time. SPU concludes tournament
play tomorrow evening against 13th-ranked Hawaii Pacific. That
match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm.
