SEATTLE (June 15) For the second year in
a row, Seattle Pacific University track and field champion Chris
Randolph has been selected the male co-athlete of the year in the
Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Randolph (Sr., Lone Tree, Co./Denver
Christian), who won his second straight NCAA Division II decathlon
title, shares the award with Western Washington basketball star
Grant Dykstra. Central Washington volleyball player Leanne
McGahuey was voted the GNAC female athlete of the year.
It was the latest of many awards won by
Randolph this spring. Earlier, he was named NCAA Field Athlete of
the Year, GNAC Track & Field Athlete of the Year and Seattle
Pacific's Athlete of the Year.
Last month, Randolph was dominant in winning
the national decathlon crown with the third-highest score by an
American this year. He scored a school and GNAC record 7872 pointsthe
highest total in the Div. II meet since 1988.
Randolph will compete at the USA Track &
Field Championships in Indianapolis June 21-22.
"Chris challenged himself anew at
each and every practice this year and as a result raised himself
to a whole new level," SPU head coach Karl Lerum said. "He
had a phenomenal senior year, inspiring those with whom he trains
and competes with, as well as those he interacts with in the
campus community."
This past season Randolph also won GNAC titles
in the outdoor 400 meters and the indoor long jump and distance
medley relay. He also placed second in the long jump and third in
the discus in the outdoor meet and second in the 60 hurdles and
third in the high jump in the indoor meet. He also set SPU outdoor
records in the 400 meters and decathlon and indoor records in the
60 hurdles, long jump, pole vault and heptathlon.
Randolph becomes the first repeat winner of the
GNAC Athlete of the Year. A year ago, Randolph shared the GNAC
all-sports award with Seattle University soccer player Bobby
McAlister. He won the conference track athlete of the year three
times.
