EMPORIA, Kansas (May 27) Seattle Pacific University got a fifth-place finish from Lauren VerMulm in the javelin as the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships concluded Saturday at Welch Stadium.

VerMulm (So., Mount Vernon, Wa.), the GNAC champion, launched her best throw of the season on her second attempt, sending the spear 153 feet, 2 inches. Only one other of her throws went beyond 140 feet however. It was the second year in a row that VerMulm earned All-America.

Katie McMeel of Central Washington got off the best opening throw at 160-4 and held on until the final round, when Holly Noller of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville eclipsed her by 2 centimeters.

Teona Perkins (Jr., Kennewick, Wa.) made the high-jump height of 5-3¼ but no higher. She tied for 15th. Leslie Crutcher of Nebraska Kearney won at 5-9¼.

Brandi McCoy (Sr., Richland, Wa.) finished 12th in the steeplechase final. Her time of 11:48.73 was more than 25 seconds slower than her last two outings. Abilene Christian's Trina Cox won handily in 10:27.71.
