SEATTLE (May 17) -- Seattle Pacific University,
which won a conference-record six team titles, has claimed its
first Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Sports Team
Championship. The Falcons edged defending champion Western
Washington 157-154, ending the Vikings' four-year reign.
SPU also won its third consecutive women's
all-sports title, finishing 20 points ahead of runner-up Central
Washington (103-83). Western Washington won the men's all-sports
title for the fifth consecutive year; SPU took third.
The Falcons have won the GNAC Academic
All-Sports Award for the past two seasons. The 2005-06 winner will
be announced this summer.
Seattle Pacific won five of the seven women's
titles, finishing first in cross country, soccer, indoor
track-and-field and outdoor track-and-field and sharing the
volleyball title with Central. The Falcons also won the men's
basketball championship.
Central Washington and Western Washington were
the only other schools to win more than one championship.
Going into the spring, SPU stood at No. 8 in
the NACDA Directors' Cup standings for NCAA Division II. The
Directors' Cup honors institutions maintaining a broad-based
program, achieving success in many sports. Each Div. II
institution is awarded points in a combined 14 sports for men and
women.
Points are awarded (on a two-point increment)
based on the final conference finishes in each of the conference's
14 sports football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer,
men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball,
men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's
outdoor track & field, baseball and softball.
