SEATTLE (May 13) Seattle Pacific
University's Karin Rohde won her third straight steeplechase while
setting both school and meet records to highlight the Falcons'
final regular season track and field meet, the Ken Foreman
Invitational Saturday at West Seattle Stadium.
Rohde (So., Bellingham, Wa./Mount Baker) was
one of three SPU winners and a total of three meet records were
broken in clear but breezy conditions. Altogether, the Falcons
added or improved upon four NCAA Division II provisional
qualifying marks.
Trimming more than 7 seconds off her previous
best time, Rohde easily won the steeplechase in 10:58.7. Teammate
Brandi McCoy (Jr., Richland, Wa.) boosted her qualifying chances
with a second-place time of 11:13.1.
Mary Moriarty (Fr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard)
strengthened her bid for nationals, cutting more than 8 seconds
off her 3000 time and finishing first in 10:06.03.
Monica Anderson (So., Bremerton) made the NCAA
qualifying list in the pole vault with a career-best clearance of
11-8, tying for second place. Kathleen Donahue surpassed her own
meet record with a winning height of 12-11½.
The other meet record came from Simon Fraser's
Ruky Abdulai, who broke a longstanding women's long jump record
with a best leap of 20 feet, 5¾ inches. It broke Karin
Grelsson's 13-year-old mark of 20-3¾. Abdulai also won the
100 hurdles in 14.17 and ran on the Clan's victorious sprint
relay.
Seattle Pacific's Eddie Strickler (Jr.,
Richland, Wa.) summoned a big kick to win the 800 in 1:53.80.
Chris Randolph (Sr., Lone Tree, Co.) matched
his No. 2 all-time SPU clearance in the pole vault at 14-11.
The NCAA will determine its finals participant
list Tuesday, with the championship meet May 25-27 in Emporia,
Kan.
