AZUSA, Calif. (April 13) Chris Randolph
smashed the longstanding Seattle Pacific University record in the
decathlon while finishing in third place at the Mount SAC Relays
late Thursday night.
With three of his event marks ranking among the
SPU all-time top five, Randolph (Sr., Lone Tree, Co./Denver
Christian) scored 7612 points to break the record of 7520, set by
Steve Gough in 1970.
Former NCAA Division I champion Ryan Harlan won
the meet with 7681 points, holding off Joe Cebulski (7649) and
Randolph, who outscored Harlan by 336 points on the second day.
The Falcons' Lauren Ver Mulm (So., Mount
Vernon, Wa.) took fifth place in the women's javelin with a best
throw of 144 feet, 10 inches.
The defending Div. II national champion,
Randolph established four personal records during the final five
events, and had six PRs altogether. He won the top flight's
400-meter dash (48.95) and was second in the 110 hurdles (14.82)
and the final event, the 1500 (4:25.83).
His overall score was 312 higher than his
previous career best and automatically qualifies him for the NCAA
Championships next month.
Randolph's pole vault clearance of 14-11 and
his hurdles clocking each rate No. 2 on school lists. The 400
ranks No. 3. His other marks were 21-10 3/4 in the long jump, 42-1
1/4 in the shot put, 6-6 in the high jump, 137-6 in the discus and
182-7 in the javelin.
Seattle Pacific's Teona Perkins will high-jump
at Mount SAC Friday. The balance of the SPU teams will compete
Saturday at the Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg.
