March 14, 2006

CLEVELAND, Mississippi (Mar. 14) Birds of a feather will face one another when the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for men's basketball commences next week.

Alabama's Montevallo won the South Region championship Tuesday night and will meet Seattle Pacific University in the first quarterfinal game Mar. 22 in Springfield, Mass. The two schools share the same mascot: Falcons.

Seattle Pacific (25-5) won the West Monday night to fill the first Elite Eight slot. Tenth-ranked SPU beat Western Washington 81-77.

Montevallo (29-4), ranked No. 7 nationally, edged Arkansas-Monticello, 89-86, in overtime. Marcus Kennedy led the way with 35 points and 15 rebounds.

The other quarterfinal pairings are Southern Illinois-Edwardsville vs. defending champion Virginia Union, Winona State (Minn.) vs. Barton (NC) and Stonehill (Mass.) vs. Tarleton State (Tex.).

All games will be played at the MassMutual Center. Winners play in the semifinals Mar. 23. The national championship will be televised live on CBS Mar. 25.

This will be Seattle Pacific's third trip to the Elite Eight. The Falcons advanced to the semifinals in 2000 and were eliminated in the quarterfinal stage in 1965.
