CLEVELAND, Mississippi (Mar. 14) Birds
of a feather will face one another when the NCAA Division II Elite
Eight for men's basketball commences next week.
Alabama's Montevallo won the South Region
championship Tuesday night and will meet Seattle Pacific
University in the first quarterfinal game Mar. 22 in Springfield,
Mass. The two schools share the same mascot: Falcons.
Seattle Pacific (25-5) won the West Monday
night to fill the first Elite Eight slot. Tenth-ranked SPU beat
Western Washington 81-77.
Montevallo (29-4), ranked No. 7 nationally,
edged Arkansas-Monticello, 89-86, in overtime. Marcus Kennedy led
the way with 35 points and 15 rebounds.
The other quarterfinal pairings are Southern
Illinois-Edwardsville vs. defending champion Virginia Union,
Winona State (Minn.) vs. Barton (NC) and Stonehill (Mass.) vs.
Tarleton State (Tex.).
All games will be played at the MassMutual
Center. Winners play in the semifinals Mar. 23. The national
championship will be televised live on CBS Mar. 25.
This will be Seattle Pacific's third trip to
the Elite Eight. The Falcons advanced to the semifinals in 2000
and were eliminated in the quarterfinal stage in 1965.
