SPU Seniors Shine on Senior Night; Falcons' Women's Basketball Team Wins Big
March 4, 2004

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Mar. 4) – It was a special night for a special class. All four Seattle Pacific graduating seniors scored in double figures as the Falcons (16-2 GNAC, 22-5) ended the regular season on a high note with an 89-53 victory over Central Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Led by double-doubles from Carli Grant (Sr., Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) and Jenny Poe (Sr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa.), the quartet of Falcon seniors combined for 17 points in the win. The Falcons (16-2 GNAC, 22-5) finished second in the conference after winning 15 of their last 16 games and will advance to the NCAA II tournament for the 10th straight year. Tournament selections will be announced tomorrow beginning at 7:00 p.m. on www.ncaasports.com.

Poe poured in 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and also grabbed 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Both matched career highs. Grant tallied her 10th double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Mandy Wood (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) scored 16 points and matched career highs with eight assists and six rebounds. Brittney Kroon (Sr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) rounded out the celebration for the SPU seniors with 15 points and five boards. Those four have been part of the greatest success in program history with three conference titles, two regional titles and two appearances in the NCAA II Elite Eight, including a trip to the national championship game last year.

The Falcons scored the first eight points of the game and soon after put together a 12-1 run to capture a 24-11 lead midway through the first half. Central Washington’s Hanna Hull brought her team back to within nine with a minute left in the half, but Kroon and Grant both sank a pair of free throws to give SPU a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the contest.

Hull scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the first half for the Wildcats (9-9 GNAC, 15-11), who remain on the playoff bubble after finishing the regular season with two straight losses. Jamie Corwin, CWU’s lone senior, added 10 points despite fouling out with 5:53 left to play.

The Falcons quickly extended their 13-point halftime lead to 24 with a 16-3 run in the opening five minutes of the second half. The Wildcats never got closer than 19 throughout the remainder of the game.

Seattle Pacific shot 48 percent for the game and held Central Washington to just 31 percent. The Falcons also made 6-of-13 from three-point range and 29-of-39 from the free-throw line. SPU had a 55-31 advantage in rebounding

The Falcons await tomorrow’s NCAA tournament selection show for the West Region tournament site and seeds. The tournament begins Friday.
