SEATTLE (Mar. 4) It was a special night
for a special class. All four Seattle Pacific graduating seniors
scored in double figures as the Falcons (16-2 GNAC, 22-5) ended
the regular season on a high note with an 89-53 victory over
Central Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game
Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.
Led by double-doubles from Carli Grant (Sr.,
Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) and Jenny Poe (Sr., 5-8, Enumclaw,
Wa.), the quartet of Falcon seniors combined for 17 points in the
win. The Falcons (16-2 GNAC, 22-5) finished second in the
conference after winning 15 of their last 16 games and will
advance to the NCAA II tournament for the 10th straight year.
Tournament selections will be announced tomorrow beginning at 7:00
p.m. on www.ncaasports.com.
Poe poured in 15 of her game-high 21 points in
the second half and also grabbed 10 rebounds for her second career
double-double. Both matched career highs. Grant tallied her 10th
double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points and 11
rebounds.
Mandy Wood (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) scored
16 points and matched career highs with eight assists and six
rebounds. Brittney Kroon (Sr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) rounded out the
celebration for the SPU seniors with 15 points and five boards.
Those four have been part of the greatest success in program
history with three conference titles, two regional titles and two
appearances in the NCAA II Elite Eight, including a trip to the
national championship game last year.
The Falcons scored the first eight points of
the game and soon after put together a 12-1 run to capture a 24-11
lead midway through the first half. Central Washingtons
Hanna Hull brought her team back to within nine with a minute left
in the half, but Kroon and Grant both sank a pair of free throws
to give SPU a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the
contest.
Hull scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in
the first half for the Wildcats (9-9 GNAC, 15-11), who remain on
the playoff bubble after finishing the regular season with two
straight losses. Jamie Corwin, CWUs lone senior, added 10
points despite fouling out with 5:53 left to play.
The Falcons quickly extended their 13-point
halftime lead to 24 with a 16-3 run in the opening five minutes of
the second half. The Wildcats never got closer than 19 throughout
the remainder of the game.
Seattle Pacific shot 48 percent for the game
and held Central Washington to just 31 percent. The Falcons also
made 6-of-13 from three-point range and 29-of-39 from the
free-throw line. SPU had a 55-31 advantage in rebounding
