Falcons Get 22 From Wood; Women Make Nanooks 14th Straight Victim

FAIRBANKS, Ak. (Feb. 25) – Mandy Wood scored a game-high 22 points and Carli Grant recorded her ninth double-double of the season to lead Seattle Pacific to an 86-56 victory over host Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday night at the Patty Center.

Wood (Sr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) had more points by halftime than UAF’s top scorer for the game. She poured in 16 points in the first half alone to help Seattle Pacific (15-1 GNAC, 21-4), which one its 14th straight game, to a 17-point lead at the break.

The Falcons led by eight with less than three minutes remaining before intermission, but SPU scored nine unanswered points, including five from Wood, to finish the half. The Falcons went on a 10-2 run early in the second half, capped off by a three pointer by Wood, to pull ahead by 22 points and put the game out of Fairbanks’ (3-13 GNAC, 6-18).

Wood matched her career high for three pointers made in a single contest for the second time in the past three games. She shot 6-for-8 from behind the arc. Grant (Sr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Falcons also got 17 points, 10 of them in the second half, and five assists from Autumn Fielding (Jr., 5-9, Kennewick, Wa.)

Karen Rabung led the Nanooks with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in 24 minutes off the bench. Cristina Bruketta chipped in 10 points, also in a reserve role. UAF’s starters combined for just 26 points, led by eight apiece from Kari Reabold and Jen Wasson.

The Falcons shot 49 percent from the field and connected on 13-of-23 (57 percent) three-point attempts. The Nanooks shot 42 percent for the game, but just 1-of-7 from long range. The Falcons won the battle of the boards 39-29, led by Grant’s game high of 10.

The Falcons return home for their final two regular season games of the season beginning with a showdown against league-leading and eighth-ranked Western Washington Thursday at 7:00 p.m. A Seattle Pacific victory would create a tie atop the GNAC standings.
