Central Washington Upsets Falcon Men; Ends SPU Home Winning String, 98-87

SEATTLE (Feb. 18) Lance Den Boer scored 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Central Washington handed 8th-ranked Seattle Pacific University its first home loss of the season, 98-87, Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (12-3, 20-4) fumbled an opportunity to extend their lead over Western Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, with the Vikings falling 75-74 at Northwest Nazarene. Seattle Pacific was coming off a win over No. 2-ranked WWU Thursday.

Marching to the foul line 39 times, the Wildcats (8-6, 13-10) kept their NCAA Division II tournament hopes alive by spoiling SPU Senior Night. They took the lead with a 16-3 burst midway through the second half. Johnny Spevak added 25 points for CWU, which shot 72 percent in the second half from the field and, overall, made 10 of 20 three-pointers and 30-39 free throws.

Tony Binetti (Sr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) led Seattle Pacific with 22 points before fouling out and Dustin Bremerman (Sr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) had 17 despite missing the final 15 minutes of the first period after being charged with his second foul.

Mike Bushmaker's (Sr., 6-7, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) 13 points helped the Falcons forge a 38-30 lead late in the first half, when the visitors shot just 31 percent.

During the go-ahead run, De3n Boer hit a couple of long treys an scored eight points. Spevak drove for the final two buckets and a 64-55 advantage with 11:28 remaining.

Seattle Pacific closed within 78-76 at the 5:32 mark but Spevak and Den Boer contributed eight of their team's next 11 points, restoring the lead to 89-80. with 2:41 left. Den Boer was 10-12 at the line and drilled 6 of 8 behind the arc.

With the loss, SPU missed a chance to go unbeaten at home for the first time since 1996-97. It had won 11 in a row since last season.

The Falcons' 27 fouls were a season high and the 39 opponent free throw attempts were the most in more than five seasons. Seattle Pacific's final three regular season games are on the road, beginning Thursday at Seattle University.
