No. 8 Falcon Men Hold On to Beat No. 2 Western, 90-86; Take GNAC Lead
February 16, 2006

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Feb. 16) Behind the 27 points of Dustin Bremerman, 8th-ranked Seattle Pacific University reclaimed the lead in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference by holding on for a 90-86 win over No. 2 Western Washington Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

It was the 12th straight home victory for the Falcons (12-2, 20-3), who nearly squandered an 8-point lead in the final 90 seconds. The Vikings (11-2, 19-3) had begun the week as the top-ranked team in the West Region of NCAA Division II, just ahead of SPU.

Tony Binetti (Sr., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) sank two free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining to finally seal the verdict. Western had scored eight straight points and missed a chance to go in front on Kyle Jackson's errant three-point attempt from the left corner with 8 seconds to go.

Bremerman (Sr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) continued a torrid stretch of February games, drilling 7 of 8 threes. Binetti added 17 points and six assists.

Tyler MacMullen converted 11 of 12 field goals and paced the Vikings with 24 points and eight rebounds.

Seattle Pacific held the lead virtually the entire contest, and led by as much as 10 in both halves. Bremerman hit a trey from the right side and two foul shots for an 81-74 lead. He then fed Robbie Will (So., 6-10, Seattle/O'Dea) for a dunk and a seemingly safe 88-80 gap with 2:52 left.

Western forced two turnovers and got back-to-back threes from Tyler Amaya and Jackson, the latter with 28 seconds remaining. Jackson's final shot bounced off the front rim and Binetti recovered the rebound and sped upcourt before being fouled.

In avenging a 95-84 loss in Bellingham last month, Seattle Pacific out-rebounded WWU 30-25 and took advantage of surprisingly sub-par foul shooting by Western, which leads the nation in that category (.792) but missed 5 of 12 attempts. The Falcons made 16 of 19.

Both teams shot well from the field; Western making 58 percent ((35-60) and SPU 56 percent (32-57). Bremerman hits 9-11 overall. It was his third game of seven or more threes in the last five games.

SPU hosts Central Washington in its final home game Saturday at 7.
